welcome to our first official not-treaded-in-the-first-second-after-opening-thread in a foreign language !___!

in this thread it is not just a matter of courtesy to write in the English language, but merely a duty. to begin with, you can start telling us something about your relationship towards English in general (everything except passion is inacceptable! ) and specifically about your experiences at school/work/during holidays/whatever.

hopefully, this isn't going to be a second-rate thread in 1337. >__> nor it is a requirement to be the next shakespeare. just have a good time and keep your cursor close to the maybe best online dictionary available in cases of doubt and wonder. ^^

ZOMG. I am an english advanced course customer (if it is right to write that so *clawthebeard) and i think that AE/BE rocks, but more rocks the "creolean" - also known as "pidgin". "Pidgin" is a mix made of two languages (e.g. German/ English).

I use mostly http://dict.cc for searching required vocabularies.
Well, who found all mistakes in my posting?

If I am allowed to ask:
Which English do you use? AE, BE, Pidgin, sociolect or a real individual?

I DO need English and Italian, as long as I stay the mix of holiday bathmaster / housemaster. I already liked it at school, however, my English and Italian already have been better there. But of course, I still know how to pretend this children - baddies from doing mad things. ...

I think about joining some free English lessons at university, would'nt definitely be something stupid.

Gott, fühle ich mich gerade bescheuert, in einem deutschen Forum einen Beitrag in Englisch zu verfassen. ^^

After finishing school in 2004 - I had English as an advanced level course (= Leistungskurs; my former teacher tended to call it like that in English) - I decided to take American Studies (Amerikanistik) as one of my subjects at university since I really like the language and did not know what to study anyway. >_>

English has always been a pretty boring subject for me. As I said, I really like the language itself, but most teachers and lecturers just do not seem to be able to create an entertaining atmosphere (even though I somehow enjoyed the Leistungskurs hours back in school because our teacher was really kind). And, honestly, most of the English and American literature you have to read in school and university is boring crap. :P

I usually try to use British English but since I have played so many American games, read so much American literature and watched a couple of Hollywood films in their original synchronisation, I tend to use American English orally.
As mentioned, I occasionally watch some movies in English, but usually, I prefer the German version. Especially because I rarely watch TV alone.

I've been to England for several times now. During my schooldays I "had" to go there to attend summer schools. In the end, the duty to go there turned out to be much more than that. It was fun almost every time. The best thin about that stuff was that during my first trip there (where I went with a friend from school) I took part in a contest and I won a two weeks lasting trip for the next year (and even better: another place). As for the fact that I went there on my own, I didn't have any other Germans to talk to and I was forced to approach other international students. In the end I ended up in a group of friends from Spain, Turkey, Russia and some others (long time ago). I never had that much fun in my holidays and most probably I learned most of my English there.
Moreover I had "Leistungskurs" in English and even though there were many others who have been to the US or UK for a year, the teacher almost thought I was the best. Be it as it may...
After school I had an internship near London, which was also great. Well the work definitely wasn't but there many young interns and we had much fun in the evening. And even the collegues from work went to town with us at night. Very different to Germany I think.

Due to my stays in the UK I always thought I would speak BE, but they told me it would be more AE. But I think in the end it is always a mixture. Most often I don't know how to spell certain words because of the differences...

In general I must admit I dislike "the British". Just sitting in a pub and being asked whether or not I'd like "to borrow" a girl is simply annoying. And couples that are doing really pr0n things in the public in addition drunken football fans is just not the way I like it. More like the last remaining "Ladies and Gentlemen". Hard to find, though...

CT is right with his German statement...just btw.

oy yeah and watching movies is definitely better in English. Except for special ones like "Usual suspects" where I don't even understand a single word uttert by Fenster...

creole and pidgin are not exactly the same. ^^ the former is what people make up from two languages and is some kind of mix with a VERY simplified grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. they just exist for communicative purposes so that people can somehow talk to each other, although they don't know the other language.

pidgins are quite more interesting. there you've got children which are born in a surrounding where creole is spoken. so they form it into a NEW language (a new mother tongue) with its own full functional grammar, vocabulary etc. - it sounds extremely weird to speakers of "real" English but it works 100%.

you need to force yourself to be silent at the end of words and to sound really bitchy arrogant. 8D but in my opinion it's far more elegant and HAS after all some kind of grammar.

it depends on the point of view. :/ I really don't know how I am supposed to ever make it through that study if, in fact, everything bores me. thankfully enough this has yet to happen. ^^

if austen writes how she squeezes her main characters into the best places to make a good marriage than it is, though from today's point of view a little antiquated, a thousand times better than what goethe has ever done. o_o

And I get every game and book and film in english if possible (if its not originally from Germany) or with english subtitles in the case of animees

(never been to england or another english-speakin land but used it a lil bit on student exchange in denmark uh... my guest-family knew german ^^)

I prefer AE for some reason except of some unnecessary details.

I go at a Vocational school and we only have Englisch as subject one times a 45 minutes in the week but we can get the K.u.K (an Englischcertificate) at the next year. At the moment I want to improve my Englisch because i want to improve my chance for a job after the training .I haven't good experiences with the most englischteachers because in my opinion they are not a help for learning Englisch.

as i really really like this beautiful language.i even happen to soliloquize in english now and then weird i know -but still: it's fun ! you should try that, too
but i must admit that the amount of my english vocabulary isn't too big yet, as i just finished 9th grade. but nevertheless i try to read and to watch movies in english as much as i can, as i learned a hell of a lot words and phrases that way!though i always need a dictionary or the german edition while reading an english book..but there's no better way of learning english, i guess.
by the way, i don't have a clue whether i use american or british english, though i definitely pronounce it the british way.but there's also the way of writing some words and the differences in the vocabulary.but i really think i tend to british english, as i really dislike the way the americans pronounce their english.i like to call that " humbled english"

I did an English advanced course for my Abitur (dude, is there an English word for that? We tend to call their graduation "graduation" as well, so I guess one germanism in an English text is fine with everyone … regarding the average number of anglicisms in German texts) as well with quite a satisfying result at the exam. I love learning languages in general, the more exotic the better; but English was quite a good start when I had my first contact with it in the third grade in elementary school.
I've never been to England or America actually. During tenth grade my English teacher was the mere incompetence in person who wasn't even able to spell simple words correctly. Once she insisted that the word "alcohol" is spelles "alcohool" and even when some of us tried to correct her, she kept saying "I studied English, I know better".
Anyway, I tried to hang on and watched a bunch of English films during that time and began to read English books. And if I hadn't done that I would probably not be able to speak English as I do now. It helped me a lot, especially to understand colloquial expressions and slang.

I like the language a lot even though I'm far from speaking it perfectly. So I just keep on watching films, reading books (just finished "Memoirs of a Geisha") and writing English stuff in order to improve my skills.

CT's quite right that it's weird to write English here, though I do quite often post in English forums. Feels different somehow. But I like it nonetheless …

i'm at this time in england, because of an school-exchange between hamburg and london.

It always rains in London. Well, at least it is always very foggy. (If there is anything we have learned from Edgar Wallace movies, it is the fact that the streets in London are basically impassable at night due to the absurd amount of misty fog that covers the pavement. And that every Kinski movie is an instant classic, of course. )

Anyway, does anyone know what Pro-Seminar I should take in the upcoming semester? I do not need to take an Einführungsveranstaltung, so I am pretty much free to choose the branch, but all those courses sound amazingly boring. >_>

Main points I and II sound pretty interessting. I would choose point number I (Literatur und Literaturwissenschaft) because I'm interessted in american literature. And cause I'm a little fan of the american history (I don't know why...) I would choose american history and society, too.

Hm, maybe because of the civil war. That wasn't a fight for oil, money or power but for human rights like freedom in first case. I don't have in mind the things that stands behind this motivations.
