If they genuinely have an interesting story based reason for doing this, then okay, I'm open to that, but I think the problem is that, more often than not these days, stuff like this is only done as a sort of cheat, in the hopes of instantly making a character more important within the lore of the show and expanded franchise right from the outset than they otherwise would be, rather than carving out and earning that place the old fashioned way. By being a compelling character, well acted. And no matter how many times Hollywood tries to game the system, audiences see through those kind of manipulations every single time. Beloved characters become that way because they earn a place in our affections. There are no short cuts to achieving that, no matter how many giants your new character tries to ride on the shoulders of.
