I know what you mean, it took me half a year to read this book because you need to take a rest between the lines to think about what was now going on in the story.

Tolkin wrote a lot of unnecessary stuff.
The reason was that people in former times couldn't go holiday in foreign countries anytime like nowadays, so British authors were used to write in their works every single detail of the landscape.
This style was common used to this time, think about it that Lords of the Ring was written around 1940-45, so Tolkin choose of course this style.

Well, this huge describtion of the world of Middle Earth and the hobbit family quarrels are annoying, and have mostly nothing to do with the plot, but after the first fithy pages you get used to it.
I wonder sometimes how the fellowship could be so easy going when they were in such a rush.

The book is hard to read in many cases but the story is more detailed than you could show in a nine hour triology, but the good thing is that the movie got more into details Tolkin just mentioned in his books, like the Uruk-Hai.

I started "learning" english with my lovely RPGs and Animes, the games I used to buy in the United States helped a lot improving my english but i have still some problems with the grammar. actually i dont really know when to use which "time" so i often mess up everything.
and the japanese animes where helping also, because i get subbed animes from the internet, animes with english subtitle.
my english teacher warned me that it wouldn t be easy if I take the english leistungkurs in my school. like boo there are only idiots in my class so it wasnt that difficult to get 15 points.

I would appreciate it if someone would point out my mistakes in this post ^^

Why is everyone complaining about Tolkien?
I loved this book. I just read it in german, but still, this is right like fantasy should be. Like a big fairy tale, you need a few moths for. Many details, that helps you to imagine everything.
I admit that it is sometimes tiring, but you shouldn't rush reading a book of this size. Just take your time and enjoy the fantasy, that is the way to read fantasy stories. ;)

In my class, the idiot is the teacher not the students. We had a listening comprehension last lessen, and she wrote down some words we might not know, and explained them. And "need" was one of those words. Maybe i'm wrong, but i guess that everyone should know this word to reach the 12th class. ;)

Obviously nine out of ten English teachers are just incompetent. They claim to know which words are important for conversations and which are not and that's just plain bullshit. There is no "list of words you have to know" or vice versa.
Fortunately, my advanced course teacher was really great. He just talked to us, we read English books and watched English films, really great films like 2001: A Space Oddyssey, Dead Poet's Society or Pulp Fiction. He never gave us vocabularies, we just used dictionaries and fetched the words we needed. We wrote fictional stories in different styles of speech (eg. Business English, Old English, Modern English) and after a while we just wrote with our own styles. There was no problem writing slang language or bad words like "fuck" or "shit". We wrote short stories, novellas and so on and that was something that really helped us learning English. If I ever became an English teacher, that would be exactly the way I would teach. It was great.

Gosh, I just thought about practising my French a little bit and posted some assumably weird stuff in our new French Talk Thread. Compared to writing English, it is actually really tough to get the same thing done in French. Especially because I stopped learning, reading and writing that shitty language more than four years ago. >_>

Nevertheless, I really appreciated this chance. I think I should speak more than two languages properly, so I should probably (re-)intensify my French and Latin practice. ^^

I don't understand a word in French even though I learned it for five years. I don't know why but I was never in the mood to do any study for that language and so I just forgot everything. A shame, if you ask me now since I'd like to be as good in French as I'm in English.

By the way, it's hard for me to write in the Japanese Thread, too. Regarding the fact that I'm learning Japanese for only about a year now, I can speak it quite well even though my word pool is of course extremely narrow. To write it, however, is another story and quite hard. A standard posting in that thread takes thrice the time I need for a German or an English post, if not even more. My best friend's the dictionary in order to check if the characters I used are the right ones … nonetheless I like writing posts in Japanese since that's really a good excercise. :)

Believe me, writing in French is even hard for me. :D
Since nearly every verb or adjective depends on the gender of the nouns in a phrase (and I always mix them up!) you will make far more mistakes in witten French than in spoken. Not to mention all the endings (declination anyone?) which are pronounced the same way o_O

But as my cousin in France had to learn German I noticed that German is even worse to learn :D We are just lucky that we didn't have to!

I know some French guys who had to learn German ... - oh, that was hard! English is much easier to learn than most other languages as we hear, see (TV/movies) and read (internet) much English. Most foreign people can speak English pretty well, but those who have it as native language often can't speak more than 2 words in another language ... they often don't need that, though.

@ Diomedes: And I still don't like Tolkien. I really appreciated to read Shakespeare, but Tolkien... well, you all know the story.

It was just a matter of time 'til some would open a French thread... shit. :D Although I understand most of the text when reading it, I don't understand a word when it is spoken. And additionally I just can't write a single French post. I really unlearned nearly all words and grammar as well. Sadly so.

I just hope nobody's going up to something. Although I'm moderator in this discussion forum, I really don't know all of the French swear-words. ;)

Such a waste of time, I finished my homework a few minutes ago and what should I say about it? It is just ridiculous and laughable! It was a "What can u see on teh pretty picture?" "What do you think the comic wants to show us?" exercise (about South Africa and the Apartheid...uhh BORING). Am I in a Kindergarden? And the best thing: my English teacher (Miss Bölköw, it sounds even like someone who cant speak english) is making a lot of spelling mistakes? Is that a bad joke?

You should say "makes a lot of …" because the progressive form indicates that she is doing it right now. Well, it could be that she is making mistakes right now, but since you're writing about a general habit, you should use the present simple tense. The question mark is also weird.

That's what I found so far but it's no problem at all. One would mark these mistakes in an exam but everyone understands what you're saying, so stay frosty. ;)

In that case it will be: from Mazda 3 (current ride) to Audi Sportcabrio (or something familiar), follwed by Lamborghini Diablo... yellow of course. :D I just love those doors. :creepy:

Sorry but I can't figure out what may be so great in a Lamborghini Diablo. I'm just no big fan of this typical italian sports car design. Can't see a major difference to a Ferrari. Looks allmost the same. :confused:

I prefer something less expensive and more elegant. Something like a Mitsubishi 3000GT or a Nissan Skyline. Maybe a bit tiny, but that's ok. 8)

If it has to be a "usual" car, I would choose a Opel Astra or a Nissan 350 Z. Of course, in my current financial condition I would be happy about any car, even if it's already 20 years old. I just don't want to take this expenisve, noisy, gross smelling, unconfortable, time ignoring bus anymore. -_-

I am cursed thats for sure. I wish since my childhood for a BMW 3 as my first car and it IS possible to get it. A good girlfriend told me today that she would get the BMW from her brother, I was fucking shocked. She said a few months ago " This car is to big, I would never drive such a car" and now she is such a pain in the neck.. argh I could kill myself..I am so jealous :(

Actually, the word "angst" does exist in the English language. It's one of the rare germanisms they adopted from us (like kindergarten oder rucksack). Its meaning however is slightly different from the German counterpart since "angst" in English doesn't mean just fear but more something like "to be scared halfway to death" … it therefore is a quite strong expression.
I've never heard an adjective made out of it, though.
