    Hui, lange nicht mehr benutzt...

    EU-Krise: Irland sagt nein zum Reformvertrag.

    Bei einer Stimmbeteiligung von 45% hat das irische Volk "Nay" zum EU-Reformvertrag von Lissabon, dem Ersatzvertrag zur ebenfalls demokratisch verworfenen EU-Verfassung vor 3 Jahren, gesagt. Damit kann der Vertrag nicht in Kraft treten, da dafür ein einstimmiger Entscheid aller Mitgliedstaaten nötig gewesen wäre. Irland war der einzige Staat, der ein Referendum über das Thema durchführen liess.

    Anscheinend schafft die EU ihr grösstes Hindernis,die Demokratie, welches gleichzeitig die grösste Errungenschaft des Westens ist, nicht zu überwinden. Es spricht nicht gerade für die Mitglieder, einen verfassungsähnlichen Vertrag nicht durch das Volk absegnen zu lassen. Gründe für das Nein gibt es wohl viele, einerseits die schwache Information der Stimmbürger durch die irische Regierung, andererseits die Angst, wichtige Kompetenzen an Brüssel abgeben zu müssen und so einen wirtschaftlichen Rückfall zu erleiden. Interessant wäre zu wissen, wie die anderen Völker Europas zu diesem Vertrag geantwortet hätten. Das werden wir jetzt nie erfahren, aber es kann sich nur um Wochen handeln, bis die grossen EU-Führungsmitglieder Deutschland und Frankreich Irland an den Pranger stellen.

    Samuel P. Huntington ist verstorben

    Die meisten werden wohl jetzt fragen: Wer ist Samuel P. Huntington? Aber viele werden seiner These des "clash of civilisations" schon begegnet sein. Als Student der Internationalen Beziehungen bin ich mit der These vertraut, welche nach dem von Francis Fukuyama ausgerufenen Ende der Geschichte darauf hingewiesen hat, dass zwischen verschiedenen Kulturen genügend Sprengkraft für neue Konflikte besteht, die die Geschichte eben weiterschreiben. Natürlich war diese These nicht unumstritten und sie konnte durchaus widerlegt werden.
    Huntington hat aber die Illusion weggewischt, nachdem wir mit dem Untergang der Sowjetunion in eine endgültige Phase des Friedens eingetreten seien. Ob Kulturen eine so zentrale Bedeutung haben, wie es Huntington behauptet hat und ob sie so genau voneinander abgrenzbar und uniform sind, bleibt jedoch unklar. Trotzdem verliert die Welt einen bedeutenden Politologen.

    In Deutschland ist eine solche Vorauswahl von Embryonen verboten. In Großbritannien sind die Möglichkeiten vor kurzem sogar erweitert worden. Schon seit längerem ist es erlaubt, durch Präimplantationsdiagnostik die Vererbung schwerer Krankheiten wie Mukoviszidose auszuschließen. 2006 wurde die Erlaubnis auf bestimmte Krebsarten ausgeweitet.

    Im konkreten Fall ist die Familie über mehrere Generationen hinweg durch Brustkrebs vorbelastet. Die Eltern ließen mehrere Embryonen im Reagenzglas erzeugen und auf das Brustkrebs-Gen untersuchen. Ein Embryo, das das Brustkrebs-Gen nicht in sich trägt, wurde erfolgreich in die Gebärmutter der Frau verpflanzt. Kommende Woche soll das Baby zur Welt kommen.

    Ob es ein Junge oder ein Mädchen wird, wissen die Eltern nicht. Ohne die genetische Vorauswahl läge die Gefahr, das ein Mädchen später selbst Brustkrebs bekommt oder ein Junge die Veranlagung seinerseits weitervererbt, bei 50 bis 85 Prozent.

    He closes with the words of Sam Houston followed by a plug for his next martial arts event.

    Ich bin von morgen an bis am 6. Juli in den USA ("Studienreise"... Also Bier und Nationalparks) und habe auch keinen Zugriff auf das Internet.

    The court said that the four defendants worked as a team, were aware that copyrighted material was being shared using The Pirate Bay and that they made it easy and assisted the infringements. It categorized the infringements as ’severe’. The judge said that the users of The Pirate Bay committed the first offense by sharing files and the four assisted this.

    While the court did not agree with the plaintiff’s exaggerated estimates of losses, it still set the damages at 30 million SEK ($3,620,000). This a hugely significant amount and the court has ordered that the four should pay this amount between them.

    The judge also stated that the usage of BitTorrent at The Pirate Bay is illegal. Rest assured, other torrent sites hosted in Sweden will be keeping a close eye on developments.

    The defense put it to the judge that he had folded under intense political pressure. The judge denied this stating that the court made its decision based on the case presented.

    At one point the judge was asked if he was concerned for his personal safety after handing down this decision. The judge said he hadn’t received any harassment and was quite surprised at the question.

    While the judge won’t be getting any flowers for this verdict, Roger Wallis who spoke in favor of The Pirate Bay at their trial and received a mountain of floral tributes in return, noted, “This will cause a flood of court cases. Against all the ISPs. Because if these guys assisted in copyright infringements, then the ISPs also did. This will have huge consequences. The entire development of broadband may be stalled.”

    Peter Sunde has already explained that this decision does not mean the end of the line in this case. There will be an appeal which means we are still far away from the ultimate decision - possibly years away. Any appeal from either side must be submitted to Sweden’s higher Court by 9th May 2009.

    Rasmus Fleischer, one of the founders of Piratbyrån commented, “The sentence has no formal consequence and no juridical value. We chose to treat the trial as a theater play and as such it’s been far better than we ever could have believed.”

    As for the fate of the site, Peter has already promised that The Pirate Bay will continue. The site itself was never on trial, only the four individuals listed above.

    Das Ganze ist Teil eines Pakets von Gesetzen, die die Verwendung von energiesparenden Lichtquellen erzwingen sollen. Die Energiesparlampe, die die Glühbirne schlußendlich ersetzen soll, hat leider das Problem, dass sie eine Menge Schadstoffe, z.B. Quecksilber enthält, während die Glühbirne aus unbedenklichen Materialien besteht. Dafür ist die Lebensdauer der Engergiesparlampe aber auch 10 Mal so lang. Eine mögliche Alternative wären noch LEDs, die "ein Leben lang" halten sollen, wesentlich sparsamer sind und im Hausmüll entsorgt werden können, dafür aber deutlich höhere Anschaffungskosten haben.

    Die Glühbirne mit einem eigenen Gesetz zu verbieten halte ich für einen ziemlich radikalen Eingriff, insbesondere weil die hochgelobte Alternative so eine Schadstoffschleuder ist.
    Andererseits glaube ich, dass die technischen Möglichkeiten für energiesparende Lichtquellen schon lange zur Verfügung stehen und hauptsächlich aus Bequemlichkeit (auf Produzenten- und Konsumentenseite) nicht hergestellt bzw. gekauft werden.

    Ich denke aber auch, dass diese ganze Einteilung in Energieeffizienzklassen zu kurzsichtig ist, gerade weil sie Schadstoffe, die bei der Produktion entstehen oder in den Lampen selbst enthalten sind, nicht berücksichtigt.

    Die einen verschlafen (obwohl es um 45M$ geht) ihre Frist um drei Wochen und die anderen bezahlen, obwohl sie nicht hätten bezahlen müssen. Dilettanten in Anzug und Krawatte.

    Was zumindest die dritte offizielle Verurteilung durch einen Kleriker macht von der ich gehört habe. Wennd ihr euch fragt, warum das wenig genützt hat: Trägheit und die Gemeinschaft der Gläubigen ist noch stärker fragmentiert als die Protestanten.

    Saudi Clerics Advocate Adult Breast-Feeding

    A fatwa issued recently about adult breast-feeding to establish "maternal relations" and preclude the possibility of sexual contact has resulted in a week's worth of newspaper headlines in Saudi Arabia. Some have found the debate so bizarre that they're calling for stricter regulations about how and when fatwas should be issued.

    Sheikh Al Obeikan, an adviser to the royal court and consultant to the Ministry of Justice, set off a firestorm of controversy recently when he said on TV that women who come into regular contact with men who aren't related to them ought to give them their breast milk so they will be considered relatives.

    "The man should take the milk, but not directly from the breast of the woman," Al Obeikan said, according to Gulf News. "He should drink it and then becomes a relative of the family, a fact that allows him to come in contact with the women without breaking Islam's rules about mixing."

    Obeikan said the fatwa applied to men who live in the same house or come into contact with women on a regular basis, except for drivers.

    Al Obeikan, who made the statement after being asked on TV about a 2007 fatwa issued by an Egyptian scholar about adult breast-feeding, said that the breast milk ought to be pumped out and given to men in a glass.

    But his remarks were followed by an announcement by another high-profile sheik, Abi Ishaq Al Huwaini, who said that men should suckle the breast milk directly from a woman's breast.

    Shortly after the two sheiks weighed in on the matter, a bus driver in the country's Eastern Region reportedly told one of the female teachers whom he drives regularly that he wanted to suckle milk from her breast. The teacher has threaten to file a lawsuit against him.

    The fatwa stems from the tenets of the strict Wahhabi version of Islam that governs modern Saudi Arabia and forbids women from mixing with men who are not relatives. They are also not allowed to vote, drive or even leave the country without the consent of a male "guardian."

    Under Islamic law, women are encouraged to breast-feed their children until the age of 2. It is not uncommon for sisters, for example, to breast-feed their nephews so they and their daughters will not have to cover their faces in front of them later in life. The custom is called being a "breast milk sibling."

    But under Islamic law, breast milk siblings have to be breastfed before the age of 2 in five "fulfilling" sessions. Islam prohibits sexual relations between a man and any woman who breastfed him in infancy. They are then allowed to be alone together when the man is an adult because he is not considered a potential mate.

    "The whole issue just shows how clueless men are," blogger Eman Al Nafjan wrote on her website. "All this back and forth between sheiks and not one bothers to ask a woman if it's logical, let alone possible to breastfeed a grown man five fulfilling breast milk meals.

    "Moreover, the thought of a huge hairy face at a woman's breast does not evoke motherly or even brotherly feelings. It could go from the grotesque to the erotic but definitely not maternal."

    Al Nafjan said many in the country were appalled by the fatwa.

    "We have many important issues that need discussing," Al Nafjan told AOL News Friday. "It's ridiculous to spend time talking about adult breast-feeding."

    Unlawful mixing between the sexes is taken very seriously in Saudi Arabia. In March 2009, a 75-year-old Syrian widow, Khamisa Mohammed Sawadi, living in the city of Al-Chamil, was given 40 lashes and sentenced to six months in prison after the religious police learned that two men who were not related to her were in her house, delivering bread to her.

    One of the two men found in her house, Fahd, told the police that Sawadi breast-fed him as a baby so he was considered a son and had a right to be there. But in a later court ruling, a judge said it could not be proved that Fahd was her "breast milk son." Fahd was sentenced to four months in prison and 40 lashes, and the man who accompanied him got six months and 60 lashes.

    The original adult breast-feeding fatwa was issued three years ago by an Egyptian scholar at Egypt's al-Azhar University, considered Sunni Islam's top university. Ezzat Attiya was expelled from the university after advocating breast-feeding of men as a way to circumnavigate segregation of the sexes in Egypt.

    A year ago, Attiya was reinstated to his post.

    Radical Islam is world's greatest threat - Tony Blair

    Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has described radical Islam as the greatest threat facing the world today.

    He made the remark in a BBC interview marking the publication of his memoirs.

    Mr Blair said radical Islamists believed that whatever was done in the name of their cause was justified - including the use of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons.

    Mr Blair, who led Britain into war in Afghanistan and Iraq, denied that his own policies had fuelled radicalism.

    Asked about the argument that Chechens, Kashmiris, Palestinians, Iraqis and Afghans were resisting foreign occupation, he said Western polices were designed to confront radical Islamists because they were "regressive, wicked and backward-looking".

    The aim of al-Qaeda in Iraq was "not to get American troops out of Baghdad [but] to destabilise a government the people of Iraq have voted for", he told the BBC's Owen Bennett Jones in a World Service interview.

    'Stronger will'

    The former British leader - who now acts as the Middle East envoy for the international Quartet - said that Iran was one of the biggest state sponsors of radical Islam, and it was necessary to prevent it by any means from developing a nuclear weapon.

    "We need to give a message to Iran that is very clear - that they cannot have nuclear weapons capability, and we will stop them," he said.

    Mr Blair said he was not advocating military action, but simply saying no option could be taken off the table.

    Iran denies pursuing a nuclear weapons programme, and insists its atomic work is for civilian purposes.

    Mr Blair told the BBC his view of foreign policy had changed as a result of the 9/11 attacks: "After 11 September, rightly or wrongly, I felt the calculus of risk had changed.

    "There is the most enormous threat from the combination of this radical extreme movement and the fact that, if they could, they would use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.

    "You can't take a risk with that happening."

    Mr Blair said he agonised over how to respond to radical Islam and still had doubts that he was right.

    These are really difficult issues, he said, but added: "This extremism is so deep that in the end they have to know that they're facing a stronger will than theirs."

    Mr Blair has also expressed optimism about the prospect of peace in the Middle East. Direct talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians began in Washington on Thursday.

    Speaking in Dublin, on the prime-time entertainment programme The Late Late Show, Mr Blair said he believed the Middle East peace process was similar to Northern Ireland - and would be successful.

    He said: "I feel it can be settled. You just have to carry on."

    There was a small anti-war protest outside the Dublin studio where the interview took place.

    Mr Blair also told the Late Late Show that his successor as prime minister, Gordon Brown, remained a friend.

    In his autobiography, Mr Blair said Mr Brown was "maddening", had "zero" emotional intelligence and sought to frustrate key reforms.

    However, Mr Blair said there were many things he admired about Mr Brown and would "probably" still go for a drink with him.

    Our friends at the 10:10 climate change campaign have given us the scoop on this highly explosive short film, written by Britain's top comedy screenwriter Richard Curtis, ahead of its general release.

    It's most definitely striking and if you haven't watched it yet – taking into account the warning that it contains scenes some people may find disturbing – do so now, before I give too much away.

    Had a look? Well, I'm certain you'll agree that detonating school kids, footballers and movie stars into gory pulp for ignoring their carbon footprints is attention-grabbing. It's also got a decent sprinkling of stardust – Peter Crouch, Gillian Anderson, Radiohead and others.

    But it's pretty edgy, given 10:10's aim of asking people, businesses and organisations to take positive action against global warming by cutting their greenhouse gas emissions by 10% in a year, and thereby pressuring governments to act.

    "Doing nothing about climate change is still a fairly common affliction, even in this day and age. What to do with those people, who are together threatening everybody's existence on this planet? Clearly we don't really think they should be blown up, that's just a joke for the mini-movie, but maybe a little amputating would be a good place to start?" jokes 10:10 founder and Age of Stupid film maker Franny Armstrong.

    But why take such a risk of upsetting or alienating people, I ask her: "Because we have got about four years to stabilise global emissions and we are not anywhere near doing that. All our lives are at threat and if that's not worth jumping up and down about, I don't know what is."

    "We 'killed' five people to make No Pressure – a mere blip compared to the 300,000 real people who now die each year from climate change," she adds.

    Jamie Glover, the child-actor who plays the part of Philip and gets blown up, has similarly few qualms: "I was very happy to get blown up to save the world." The public reaction to the film will be fascinating – please add yours below.

    Curtis, writer of Four Weddings and a Funeral and Blackadder and an early 10:10 supporter, acknowledges that the 10:10 film is very direct. "The 10:10 team are a fearless, energetic bunch, completely dedicated to getting the public fired up about climate change. They also turn out to be surprisingly good at blowing stuff up," he said.

    The film, directed by top advertising director Dougal Wilson, known for the Always A Woman John Lewis ad, will be shown in cinemas and on television. Wilson met 10:10 activists on a cross-continent bike ride to the Copenhagen climate change summit last December.

    The 10:10 campaign was launched in the UK in September 2009 and has already spread to 41 countries. In Britain, 91,000 people, 3,500 businesses and 4,000 councils, school and other organisations have signed up so far.

    The Lib-Con coalition has also committed to cut the government's carbon emissions by 10% in a year, to help combat global warming. On October 10 – 10.10.10 – the campaign will hold a Global Day of Doing, involving 180 nations and events such as sumo wrestlers cycling to training in Tokyo, to 10,000 schoolchildren planting trees across Russia.

    The film is released tomorrow.
