Zitat von Ai-Ren
Ai-Ren tells the story of Ikuru and Ai, a boy faced with his own death and the girl created to comfort him. Confronted by their own mortality, the two live out their last days exploring what it means to live and die, to love, and to be human. Probably one of the most touching mangas I?ve had the pleasure to work on, Ai-Ren is one of few stories I?ve read that really gets you emotionally invested in the characters. When they laugh, you can?t help but want to smile; when they cry, you feel a light tug on your heartstrings. The art is simple but beautiful, effectively conveying the nostalgic mood of the story. A word of warning though, Ai-Ren does feature a bit of nudity, although it?s perhaps the most tasteful nudity I?ve seen in a manga (except for this one scene near the beginning). There are two main plots, one covering the lives of Ikuru and Ai, the other detailing the events that created the world they live in. The former is told elegantly, with a gentle but somber slice-of-life feel to it, while the latter is distinctly science-fiction. All in all, it?s the exquisite storytelling that I feel makes this manga one of the better underappreciated gems out there. I?ll admit, this manga isn?t for everyone, but I think it?s worth taking a look at.
