I'm a bit confused as to what this release should do - should I end up with
the Longhorn-style desktop or is there something hidden away that I can use?
I've installed the files up to the Avalon Community Technology Preview, it
finishes installing and then nothing happens. No prompts to restart, no
apparent change in windows, nothing. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

You wont end up with the longhorn UI, once you install the SDK you will be
able to develop Avalon targeted apps using xaml that will be interpreted by
the avalon shell and be displayed in regular old IE, atleast thats my
understanding...

Das war mir schon klar.
Konnte auf deinen Post nicht mehr antworten, weil ich keine Zeit hatte ^^

Die GUI wird erst veröffentlicht, wenn Avalon fertig ist. Noch befindet sich Avalon in Entwicklungsstadium. Wenn es fertig ist (voraussichtlich 2006) wird auch eine GUI für Win XP veröffentlicht.
Man kann sich aber die Beta SDK runterladen und schonmal damit ein bissl Experimentieren, wenn man programmieren kann ^^
