In Hong Kong during the '70s, the film industry was packed with talented martial artists, stuntmen, and choreographers capable of delivering astounding action sequences. This drew talent from all over the world including Japan where the talented Yasuaki Kurata had migrated from. But in Japan's own film industry there was no similar movement. Sword masters and ninjitsu experts were regularly called upon to assist in the production of action filmmaking, but there was no network and few organizations that focused on passing on the art of screen fighting, which was quite different from real-world martial arts. But in 1970, a martial arts expert-turned-film and television actor named Sonny Chiba saw the need for such a program and created the Japan Action Club as a martial arts and stunt school for mentoring future actors and stuntmen.
