naja, nix für ungut, aber ich glaube du wirst nicht drumherum kommen ohne boot cd...
ich hab es bei mir immer nur via netzwerk oder boot cd bzw. reparieren geschafft.
aber sobald der pc wieder geht besorg dir BootXP 2.50 und verändere damit den boot screen. hab es selber schon eine halbe ewigkeit und hatte nie probleme damit (ausgenommen von der boot zeile..).

ob es mit knoppix was wird kann ich auch nicht wirklich sagen. da knoppix AFAIK nur für Linux wirklich funkt, bei deinem freund der fehler nur in einer datei liegt.
naja, sobald du die cd hast funktionierst eh wieder.
