Let us recast Shinji as our real tortured protagonist: Hideaki Anno.
Here we have a man who for years has taken equal parts praise and abuse, from every side. He’s been told constantly to return to work on the one thing he’s done that’s “mattered”. Get back in the robot, Anno.
He must be sick of it. I’m sure he doesn’t want to anymore. Eva is something that’s haunted every moment of his waking life since 1995. To put this into perspective, I was four years old in 1995, and I graduate college next week. It’s a long time to be preoccupied with the same made-up universe that if Anno had his say, was ended more than a decade ago.
Whether it was a need to put food on the table or some renewed creative impulse, Anno eventually caved, got a new team behind him (including people to handle the actual segment directing) and started working on more media in the Eva universe.
In our allegorical world, during the first half of the 3.33 Anno is told that whatever he does, hecan’t get back in the robot. The old guard of Wille are ex-Nerv, maybe expatriates of Studio Gainax cautioning Hideaki to use good taste and leave well enough alone. “You’ve done enough.” Misato says, angrily. She speaks for all of the fans who have put Eva to rest and moved on. Her love has turned to the kind of ire only invoked when deep trust is broken.
The second half of the movie is Shinji/Anno finally taking charge. “Hey, you know, I should remake Evangelion!” he cries, and why shouldn’t he? Isn’t it what he was ‘born for’? Isn’t it the only thing he does that matters? So even with growing signs that something is amiss and things will go wrong, he goes through with his nonsensical mission and things are only made worse.
