From the opening scene I think it’s pretty obvious to everyone that the rival to Jacob is the smoke monster. For a very, very long time, the smoke monster and Jacob have been working together. Jacob brings people to the island, and the smoke monster judges them. And for a long time, this worked just fine. But every time Jacob brought people hoping that he’d find the group of people that would be good and make his new society with, the smoke monster would judge them and eventually they’d find them corrupt. Smoke Monster got sick of this after doing this for potentially thousands of years, and Smoke Monster and Jacob spoke about this on the beach. Jacob has always been the optimist; Smoke Monster has always been the pessimist. Smoke Monster didn’t want to judge people endlessly just to find they were corrupt and wanted it to stop. That’s why he wanted to kill Jacob, so that Jacob would stop bringing people to the island. But the rules prevented Smoke Monster from ever doing so, which I’m sure we’ll hear more about in season six, and over the hundreds of years since the Black Rock landed he planned on how to kill Jacob and end the cycle.
Daemon and Carlton said on their podcast that there was originally a scene in the 100th episode where Farady had a speech over what would happen if they set off the bomb. Pebbles that are thrown into a stream don’t change the course, the stream self corrects. These are the small changes that don’t matter and can’t change the future. But when you throw a boulder in, the stream changes. Two new streams can result. This is what happened on Lost tonight. In the universe we know, the universe that was built up throughout all of Lost seasons 1 through 5, everything on the island happened exactly as we saw it with one exception. The Variable, Juliette. Every time Juliette did virtually the same thing, maybe she hit the bomb fewer times with that rock and it didn’t go off, maybe she just died. But the important thing is that the bomb didn’t go off. But this time it did. Juliette made the bomb go off, and a new universe was created. The stream diverged and two streams now exist, Universe B was just created. It is known that everything else did always happen in Universe A based on the observations in the swan hatch in season 2. Sayid noticed the heavy concrete walls and commented on how it was similar to what was seen in Chernobyl. This is where the bomb was sealed off by Dharma, to prevent the radiation from leaking out. Small amounts of radiation may be able to be healed by the Island, but Dharma wanted to avoid any potential contamination influencing the Swan Hatch. The button needed to be pushed and the electromagnetic energy needed to be released.
What we saw tonight was the ending of Universe A. We now know everything that happens in Universe A, and what happened during the time between the failed bomb attempt of Universe A and the crash of flight 815 can be implied. Richard said when he looked at the picture of Hurley and the rest in Dharma suits that Sun showed him that they all died and that he watched them die. During the Purge the Others wiped out Dharma and the 815 survivors that were in the past, this always happened in Universe A. The last moments that we saw of Universe A were of what would happen if the Smoke Monster succeeds in killing Jacob, in ending the cycle. I predict that in season six there will be an episode that further shows what would happen if the Smoke Monster had his way, and in this episode we’ll see him killing everyone on the Island to end the cycle and make it so that he wouldn’t have to judge people anymore.
Ben was the loophole the Smoke Monster was talking about. Sayid shot young Ben in the past and Kate brought him to Richard. Richard brought Ben to the temple to be healed, and its at the temple where Smoke Monster normally hangs out. The Smoke Monster did something to Ben there and severed his link to Jacob. The Island would not be able to heal him anymore which is why he got cancer, Ben would not be able to see Jacob since his ability to interact with him is gone. It is only at the end of this episode when Smoke Monster and Ben confront Jacob that he allows Ben to interact with him once again. Ben, the master manipulator, was being manipulated all along by the smoke monster to be his loophole. Everything he has done has been according to the Smoke Monster’s plan.
