Ich hab es nicht nur geschafft, mir Beast of Yucca Flats anzusehen, sondern auch Red Zone Cuba, einen weiteren Film von Coleman Francis (sein...magnum opus...wenn man das so sagen kann...), der noch unerträglicher ist (weil wirklich NICHTS passiert, null, nada, zero, zip, zilch).
Ich muss aber zugeben, dass ich den Film nur durchgestanden habe, weil ich ihn in der Mystery Science Theater 3000 Version gesehen habe - die war nämlich grandios, eine meiner absoluten Lieblingsfolgen mit richtig genialen Kommentaren von Mike, Tom Servo und Crow T. Robot. Der Film ist übrigens so kurz, dass MST3K noch 2 Kurzfilme verarbeiten musste, um die Sendezeit zu füllen ("Money Talks", ein 50er Jahre Kurzfilm, in dem Benjamin Franklin einem Jugendlichen erklärt, wie man vernünftig Geld spart, und "Progress Island U.S.A.", ein Werbefilm über Puerto Rico aus den 70ern...beides ziemlich amüsant).
Aber den Erzähler aus Beast of Yucca Flats kann man einfach nicht vergessen - der ist nämlich noch penetranter als beispielsweise Criswell in Plan 9 oder Night of the Ghouls, und das will was heißen. Ist ja auch ein Ding, wenn man mitten in einer lächerlichen Verfolgungsjagd (ziemlich arbiträrer Tag-und Nacht Wechsel, lahme Autos...) auf einmal aus dem off "flag on the moon. How did it get there?" zu hören bekommt. Sehr random und pseudophilosophisch wie der ganze Film. Aber allein wegen Tor Johnson lohnt es sich irgendwie...ich mein, was soll man denn dazu sagen, wenn ein 300+ Pfund Wrestler ohne schauspielerisches Talent als ungarischer Raketenforscher und als Monster mit billigem Make-Up (Toilettenpapier und Talkum Puder für die Darstellung der Verbrennungen!)? Wie sagte Mike Nelson in MST3K: "Tor johnson as the beast? That's just smart casting."
Nun ja, hier jedenfalls noch eine dämliche Quote aus "Red Zone Cuba" (sehenswert unter anderem wegen dem schlechtesten Fidel Castro Darsteller überhaupt und der Darstellung der Schweinebucht mit einer Invasionsarmee von ca. 10 amerikanischen Soldaten...Castro muss gezittert haben ^^), der wohl noch schlechter als Beast of Yucca Flats ist (unglaublich, aber wahr...Ed Wood wirkt gegenüber Coleman Francis wie Orson Welles, wenn ihr mich fragt):
"You Cherokee Jack?"
"Yah. Ahm Cherokee Jack."
Oh, und noch dieser unsterbliche Dialog aus "The Skydivers", ebenfalls von Meister Coleman Francis.
"Do you want some coffee?"
"Coffee? I LIKE coffee!"
Mein Tip: zieht euch die Filme in der MST3K Fassung rein, dort sind diese nämlich ein komödiantisches Highlight, das mich ein wenig nostalgisch macht - es wäre einfach zu schön, wenn es Mystery Science Theater 3000 heute noch in dieser Form gäbe.
