Final Fantasy 14 will be adapted into a live-action television series from the production company responsible for Netflix’s forthcoming adaptation of The Witcher, Sony Pictures Television announced today.

A news release this morning said the show would stay faithful to the setting, characters, and lore of Final Fantasy 14, the franchise’s MMORPG which launched in 2013. Cid Garlond, the airship engineer, was mentioned as a principal character.

“The project will embrace the bold and genre-bending sensibilities of the revered and long-running Final Fantasy series, as it explores the struggle between magic and technology,” the statement said.

Hivemind, the company behind The Witcher, is developing the series. Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton have been tapped to write the series, and will also be part of a five-person executive producer team.

“We are working tirelessly to bring together artists from around the world who are united in honoring the extraordinary legacy of this franchise and its millions of fans around the world,” Jason Brown, Hivemind’s co-founder, said in a statement.

No formal title for the series was given, nor was a launch date or network partner.

Ich sehe die Brustgrößendiskussionen schon lebhaft vor mir. Gott sei Dank haben sie keinen Teil mit zuuu viel Nostalgiebonus genommen.

Tjoar, irgendwann muss ja mal was Gutes dabei herauskommen^^ Soweit ich das lese, kann man aber die Witcher Adaption noch nicht beurteilen. Aber sobald die rauskommt dürfte es ja zumindest eine erste Tendenz geben, ob es eher gut oder schlecht werden könnte.

Und eine Serie erscheint mir für eine MMO Adaption immerhin schonmal geeigneter als nur ein einzelner Film.

Na ja, es scheint ja zum Glück keine Adaption zu sein, sondern eine komplett neue Story in der Welt?

Im jedem Fall interessant. Werde es im Auge behalten.

Ich bin kein Fan von der Ankündigung. Live Action hat ein unendlich hohes Potenzial zu failen bei Szenarien wie Final Fantasy, die sehr stark auf Pathos, Anime-Tropes und Spezialeffekte setzen wie die Beschwörungen. Und wenn man das gut hinbekommen will, müsste man wohl noch viel mehr Geld reinpumpen als HBO in Game of Thrones. Allein schon um etwas vergleichbares wie das Finale der Shadowbringers-Mainquest zustande zu bringen, das in Live Action nicht idiotisch rüberkommt...

Ich hätte es besser gefunden, wenn man das als Anime umsetzt, wie Castlevania von Netflix. Das haben die echt gut hinbekommen, imho.
