Hi all:

I made a RPGMaker recently written in GFABasic for Windows.
There are 20 world files built in it so far by people all around the world. Latest submit from Indonesia.

You are welcome to try it.

Can you give us some facts about your program?

Hi CyberDragon:

sure:

Scenario is now at v03-1103 on November 10th 2003. :)

Lots of new features including snow/underwater/fog FX,

multi-select inquiries, help descript internal for every

Sprite Messenger Icon with examples, and more.

+ Plays RealMusic & Mp3s with auto-repeat.
+ Now has internal Add-On/system image picture editor !
+ Alpha Objects allow INFINITE tiles/castles/dungeonsetc. to

appear on any map at any pixel size up to 2016x2016 pixel map

per 16 sets, no limits, just up to HD space !

Q & A are up to 300+
Concepts are up to 18
1900+ downloadable image Add-Ons
1460+ downloadable music/SFX Add-Ons
Windows XP Compatible (cause I have WinXP now!)

Main site now has 20+ World Files by authors all around the

world.

100% Freeware and main engine gets updated 3x a week. ^-^
I'm retired, this is my lifetime project, and I still have

50+ years to work on it.

Regarding small GFX it's 320x224 pixel screen, hit

Shift-Enter to go double-screen size or default at 640x480

looks PERFECT. I'm trying to keep the filesize small so

pixels are doubled to see them.
The main system 125+ music, 180+ internal Add-Ons, and

Suzi's Quest with 500+ Sprite Messenger examples are all

internal to one .ZIP that will always fit on a floppy 3 & 1/2

inch disk. :D

Combat engine is going through upgrades with future Action

Meter in progress.

All I ask --

"If you make something interesting, please beam up a copy to

the Scenario Station so others can both play and learn in

your world."

In this, I can also learn from it, what it was that was

difficult for you to do, and how I can continue to make

future improvements in the engine to assist you in your

future Worldbuilding efforts.

* Newest features include 3-D explosions, Photon Shooter,

Action Meter, 3-char. variables, Logic Beeline Tracker,

player runner, revive at Inn, and Auto-Installer for Win32

- - -

Scenario is and always will now be called "SETUP.EXE"
So by clicking the link below, you will ALWAYS get the latest

version, no matter what the mirror says. :)

- - -

Scenario is different from RPG95/2000/2003 and most other systems in the following ways:

* Scenario is different in that it has a Sprite Messenger.
That is a series of commands that you don't type but place into your message.
They are small 8x8 pixel icons and do quite a bit !

It's different in that you don't have to remember switch #s for Treasure Chests, locks, etc. These are handled automatically inside Scenario.

It is different in that you can enter Testplay mode ANYWHERE at all, wherever your cursor happens to be, and it is near instantaneous, less than 1/4 a second on my computer. Hit [Tab] again to exit Testplay and return back to the map editor to *cheat* in the game or if you are the Worldbuilder for this world, to enter in new features to your world file.

It is different because BIG world files, that is those that use all 16 maps on the average PKZIP to 200k. This is bigger if you use additional artwork and music, but with over 500+ images included and 150+ music all internal to the 1meg engine, you won't need to.

It is different because it is Freeware (and always will be!)

It is different because a new engine gets posted every Wednesday along with a Bulletin explaining new functions and features in it.

Hi Jensma:

Well it's mostly for keyboard users only, but this Wednesday will feature the mouse, 100 tiles, SlickFloor, LooseEdge, and Ladder to start into the new set.

You can also see and download over 1900 Add-Ons I've prepared for use in the system here:
http://dw817.f2o.org/add-ons.htm

There are a little over 300+ Q & A of complex questions asked by others of me which I answer using the Sprite Messenger notation here:
http://dw817.f2o.org/qa310.htm

.. sorry you're having problems in the system ?
You can always hit CTRL-Q to quick exit/save your work anywhere you are. Or [Tab] to exit/enter Testplay.

Hi DarkSoldier:

* Glad you like it ! :D
Sorry it's running slow on your computer.

There are many ways of speeding up Scenario.

The quickest and most effective is to change your screen resolution to 640x480 and then to 24-bit or 32-bit if you can.

You can hit the "+" on the number keypad once it is up and running to double the speed of it.

You can turn OFF MIDI and SOUND EFFECTS which will speed up some computers if they are using software driven audio drivers.

And you can hit SHIFT-ENTER to change the window size to a different size if you like. A smaller window will run faster, (and might look better too) :)

Hi Dark Soldier:

Hey !
I am VERY glad to hear that it's running okay for you !

Compatibility with other computers is a high priority for me as I want everyone to enjoy their ability at Worldbuilding.

Please write to let me know if you come across any bugs, inconveniences, or if you have any suggestions, additions you'd like to see.

Scenario is only a good program because I try very hard to listen to people just like you ! :D

Hi The Question:

* Scenario (small as it is!) also comes bundled with a sample game I wrote which demonstrates all of the new features called:

Suzi's Quest. This game also gets updated every week and highlights some of the newest features in Scenario.

I don't have too many screenshots and a lot of them are really old.
I suppose I need to update, but they give a general idea of the scope on the system:

Hi Jackal:

* Current Scenario now uses the mouse. :)
http://dw817.f2o.org/engines/setup.exe

Originally Scenario was designed for keyboard only, I know that takes some getting used to, but now it uses the mouse. It's not exactly like RM2K but it's better than no mouse at all. It's a lot of work to write this stuff ! :p

This is different in that I had no mouse drivers written before.
Actually I modeled it after Dante, which was the first RPG Maker that ASCII made. I thought they did a great job and when they introduced numbered switches and requiring the mouse for plotting tiles, well they started losing me and my interest as I was never very good at using the mouse.

Using the mouse !
Move the mouse to the top-left-hand corner to bring down the main menu
move the mouse to the top-right-hand corner to pick a new tile
move the mouse to the bottom-left-hand corner to create a Sprite
I haven't made a menu motion for moving the mouse to the bottom-right-hand corner yet.

Plot tiles by clicking close to the center of the screen with the mouse. You can hold down the mouse button and drag to make circular areas. Use the "F" key to fill in a region.

Hope This Helps !

Hi TomSym:

* Hit [Shift]-[Enter] to change the size of the tiles and screen.
There are about 4 different resolutions you can choose from and you can also drag any of the 8 corners to a new windows size.

Scenario tiles are 32x32 so that a Sprite exactly fits in one of them. I am working towards ScenarioX which has 16x16 tiles but it's slow going. :)

Well ... all in one

Hope you will bring some updates or something like that ^^

* Quarters ? Maps are sized 63x63 at 32x32 pixels per map cel.

Well ... the second thing is this:
How do I come in a Menu like the "Date Base" from the RPG maker?

* There isn't one. Just hit [Esc] to bring up the main menu. :)

Then there is a big problem more:

I can't find any "Event-Orders" like "open a shop" or "a selection of awnsers"

* To create a shop, place one of the Merchant Icons next to the Sprite, like InnSign, ItemSign, WeaponSign, ArmorSign, and RuneSign. To create a Sprite, hit [Enter].

Well ... all in one
Its a really good editer ... but it have to be easyer to survey and the walk should be Pixel on Pixel ^^

Well ... there are some questions ^^

How to make the symbols?

* From the Sprite Messenger, hit [Tab].

Is there only armor and weapon to "upgrade" or is there a chance to make other weapons?

* Future Scenario will have ability to generate new weapon classes.

Is there somewhere a help?

* Scenario comes with a README.TXT located
c:\progra~1\scenar~1

How do I can put in some Pictures or something like that???

* Use the PictureFrame Icon, it is 2 down and 5 across from the top-left-hand corner. Looks like a piece of RainbowPaper.

Hi Archon:

I have some Problems because my Hero

1. Can I change the Maxlevel (How much is it maximal?) or can I say when he will reach wich level and how much Hp he will become?

* Yep ! From the map editor, hit
[Esc] P [Enter] A [Enter] A [Enter] and you can change ALL the player values to your heart's content. :)

2.The Battles are really nice, but is there a hope to play with more then 1 Hero (or is it only for 1 Hero) and how can I change the names of the other Heros???

* That will be "items" that operate on a random basis in combat.
Companions if you will, and they can get hit in combat too.
This is for future Scenario.

How do I import Chip-Sets or Herofaces etc.?

* Just copy over any of your bitmap images to \realm\
spr00.bmp to spr27.bmp (64x128)
crit00.bmp to crit23.bmp (52x56)
face00.bmp to face23.bmp (48x48)
etc.

Is there a chance to make the game playable for other players (like with the RPG-Maker)?

* I can compile your world to a single self-installable .EXE in Scenario so others can play it without needing the actual map editor itself.

Can you maybe speak German? But only, when you German can.
(Kein perfektes Englisch, ich weiß)

* Your english is fine. :)
No, I don't know German. But I do know a page that translates English to German.

Let me translate what you wrote to English ..

(Kein perfektes Englisch, ich weiß)
(no perfect English, I knows)

I used the BABELFISH ^ above to do that !
Ich verwendete das BABELFISH ^ oben, um den zu tun!

Well... I'm still testing your editor ... its a great programm with a lot of options ... but I think you have to improve it (make better / verbessern).
I think, the menu and the FS (Fight-system) is really good, but you have to make "upgrade the items"
There should be more items and weapons and the "person who makes the Rpg" should select the Items they are sold in this shop^^, you know what I mean??? (Keine Ahnung ob der das versteht ^^)
Like the Item-Editor from the RPG2K (do you have it???)
Well, is there any hope to make the liquidation (is this right??? dpi ^^ / Auflösung^^) higher?

But I really like to play with the mouse and the name-input is really good too ^^ ... to play its beautiful, but to "make a world" it is really hard to find everything ... can't you make something like a data base???

It looks like you will bring a lot of updates .. hope you don't give up with your editor ^^ (I think I would be to stubid for this) and
Good luck ^^

* It is pretty rough-cut, isn't it ?

* That's the tricky part. Scenario was made with fixed items.
I never anticipated my little program becoming so complex and so quickly. You can see I have started to add graphic items and you can associate a script with each graphic item now, but it's a bit difficult to do, because the initial engine did not provide for it.

Well, is there any hope to make the liquidation (is this right??? dpi ^^ / Auflösung^^) higher?

* You can see the liquidation by changing the map animation speed for the outside map. I did this to give the appearance of longer distances since you are outside.

To get there, from the map editor, hit:
[Esc] W [Enter] World Prefs [Enter] Slow Outside Mapping [Enter]

and then return back, go to Map #0 and hit [Tab]. This is why I don't want to have the player moving too smoothly.

But I really like to play with the mouse and the name-input is really good too ^^ ... to play its beautiful, but to "make a world" it is really hard to find everything ... can't you make something like a data base???

I have a listing of all Scenario command keystrokes now on the frontpage of my site

* Hey, you're doing fine .. I'm just a little keyboard-manic.
hyper-typer I guess. :) The keystrokes are on the bulletin, just print them out and you should do fine.

* Hi Shadow:

You can get it direct from this link:
Sie können es erhalten verweisen von dieser Verbindung

http://dw817.f2o.org/engines/setup.exe

Also, I made two major corrections last nite at 8pm,
Fixed the Snow Error and Inquiry Error. If your version is prior to 8pm last night, you should update your engine so you can enjoy the Snow Effects and Inquiry Feature.

Thanks !

I'd love to download the thingie, but I got a 56k, and it takes forever =_= The screenies look promising though. Maybe, in another time, another life...I will have a faster connection.. *dreams*

Hi DragonTear:

* It shouldn't be a problem.

It's 1.2megs. Very small. Smallest RPGMaker you'll probably ever find. Comes complete with 150+ internal music, 500+ images, 25+ sound effects, and sample world Suzi's Quest with over 500 examples of Sprite Messenger effects.

Try it out. :)

I did. 1 meg takes like, one and a half hours for me when I'm lucky- which wouldnt be a problem, since I'm such a compfreak I'm on 24/7 :p The thing is, every 30 minutes or so I get a nice little Kernel error which fucks up my whole comp and forces me to restart yeah yeah, "get a download manager"- give me one under 1 meg, please? o.o

Oof. Nah, s'okay, I'll try to download it tomorrow (it's 11pm here, dont feel like dealing with my bitching comp at this time). I browsed around on your page a little, it looks pretty complicated o_o; But I'm a keyboard fanatic too, so that ain't gonna be a prob.
Do you plan on taking money for it one day though? You're promoting it quite well, it seems.

Hi DragonTear:

* Nope ! No money. Maybe for ScenarioX but that would have to be 10 years from now or better. :) Scenario, which will always get worked on, however will always be FREE.

Lol, he meant the resolution, not the liquidation. In like, graphics. Or at least I think so.

Hi DragonTear:

* Well the resolution will PROBABLY stay the same.
However, for ScenarioX it will be even smaller. The tiles will be 16x16 and Sprites sized ..ahhm.. think it's 24x32, same scale/size as RPG2000. Double-pixel size, no scrolling maps (like Zelda 1 for the NES) (so those with slow computers can enjoy it). And the "liquidity" should be at 1 pixel scale then.

Hey, thanks for the luck !
Actually what I need is skill and somedays I come up lacking ! :)
Keeping it FREEWARE should ensure it's survival, however with all the commercial RPG Makers already out there.

Oof, I don't think you will suffer lack of skill soon. o_O According to the posts in this thread and the screens on your site I'd say it looks pretty professional. And I wasn't aware that there are so many RPG Makers "out there"- I think if you keep the thing free, the graphics good and the proggie easy enough so every noob can understand it after a short introduction you should be good to go. :)Because those are the problems of some of the other rpg makers I know...
The more the market advances, the more people expect the programs to be easy, qualitative and efficient. Just keep the updates coming and I think we'll hear more from this in the future... doesn't sound like this project will die too soon (not in the near future anyway). You've found quite a lot of fans already. And not just on these forums, I suppose ;)

* Old Age ?

* Quite a few. About 20-30 in fact. I'm keeping tabs on 'em. Only a few are free and those are DOS.

* I'll keep Scenario free. Don't worry. Probably do the same for ScenarioX too.. I - have an aversion to the way the internet is today, with trying to earn money every left turn .. It makes me wanna go the exact opposite direction.

The more the market advances, the more people expect the programs to be easy, qualitative and efficient. Just keep the updates coming and I think we'll hear more from this in the future...

* I have my eye on RPG Maker 2 for the PSX-2 right now.
It looks interesting, but very complex, since you are expected to build true 3-Dimensional people and structures.

doesn't sound like it would die too soon. You've found quite a lot of fans already. And not just on these forums, I suppose ;)

* Nope ! Although I believe a VERY good portion of Worldbuilders do come from Forums. Others come from when I post my program at a Freeware promotion site. There's just - not enough Freeware today. What was once free, now no longer is. And we have to HUNT to find the original version which the author rather carefully destroys or hides. Vicious market. I hope I never get like that.

Just kiddin' ya.
I think it's really cool of you to do that, the world needs more people like you. I hope you get the appreciation you deseve. Good luck, and keep up the good work, that's everything left for me to say. :)
